Copa América Confirms Quadrennial Schedule, Next Edition in 2028
The Copa América, the premier football competition among South American nations (CONMEBOL region), will maintain its quadrennial schedule. The next edition is set to take place in 2028, exactly four years after the 2024 tournament, which was held in the United States and won by Argentina.
The Copa América has historically followed an irregular rhythm. Over its 110-year history, making it the oldest continuously active continental football competition, it has been held every four, three, or two years, and even annually. There have also been longer intervals, with up to eight years between editions. Between 2001 and 2007, it was held every three years. It then shifted to a four-year cycle to better align with other continental competitions, notably the UEFA European Championship (the Euro).
However, a special centennial tournament, organized in collaboration with CONCACAF, was held in 2016, one year after the regular 2015 edition. It was held again in 2019, and another edition was approved for 2020 to move it to odd-numbered years, aligning it with the Euro. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 edition was postponed to 2021. The tournament resumed its usual rhythm in 2024 and will next be held in 2028. The host country has not yet been decided, but speculation suggests it could once again be the United States, with rumors also indicating that Mexico (from CONCACAF) might be invited.
