Egypt Accuses World Cup Referees of Discrimination in Match Against Argentina

The Egyptian Football Federation has officially lodged a complaint with FIFA regarding the World Cup Round of 16 match against Argentina. Egypt alleges that two questionable refereeing decisions directly contributed to their 3-2 defeat. These incidents include: a foul called on Egyptian player Marwan Attia that led to a VAR-overturned goal, and a potential foul on Mohamed Salah which, if whistled, would have invalidated Argentina's decisive late goal. The Egyptian coach expressed that they "were robbed," and Zico, the scorer of the disallowed goal, stated, "the tournament is clearly rigged."

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Egyptian Football Federation (EFA) announced that its president, Hany Abou Rida, filed a grievance requesting an investigation into French referee François Letexier for "grave officiating errors" and "double standards."

Egypt is further demanding the "exclusion of the referee and his entire team from the World Cup following an investigation into these errors." The EFA has characterized these actions as a "crime of discrimination against the Egyptian national team."

"Numerous football experts and specialized analysts, both locally and internationally, have highlighted controversial and pivotal refereeing incidents during the match. This clearly underscores the importance of upholding the highest standards of integrity, fairness, and transparency in match officiating," the EFA stated.
