Epic Games Lays Off 1,000 Employees, Closes Fortnite Modes Amidst Major Financial and Industry Challenges
Epic Games' decision to raise V-Bucks prices had already hinted at underlying fragilities in Fortnite, once thought to be an unshakeable giant. These concerns have now been dramatically confirmed with the shocking announcement of 1,000 employee layoffs. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney addressed the decision in a statement to staff, attributing it to financial difficulties and industry-wide challenges, while firmly asserting that artificial intelligence played no role.
Sweeney elaborated that the company was spending "significantly more than it earns," and a slowdown in Fortnite's engagement had contributed to this unsustainable situation. To secure its future, Epic has identified approximately half a billion dollars in cost-cutting measures, alongside the significant job reductions.
Beyond internal issues, Epic is navigating broader industry headwinds: slower growth, reduced spending, a tougher cost economy, current-generation consoles underperforming their predecessors, and increasing competition for user attention from diverse entertainment options. Sweeney also acknowledged Epic's struggles to consistently deliver engaging Fortnite content as it once did, though the game's anticipated return to the Google Store and mobile platforms is seen as a potential stabilizing factor.
The CEO explicitly stated that these layoffs are "not related to AI," emphasizing that despite productivity gains, the company aims to retain as many talented developers as possible. Affected employees will receive substantial support, including at least four months of pay, extended health benefits, and provisions for accelerated stock options.
Looking ahead, Epic Games plans to focus on creating "awesome Fortnite experiences with fresh seasonal content, gameplay, stories, and live events." The company also anticipates major announcements regarding the evolution of Unreal Engine 5 and UEFN towards Unreal Engine 6. Sweeney concluded by stating that current market conditions are the most extreme since the company's early days, presenting both massive disruptions and significant opportunities for those who emerge successful.
These cost-reduction efforts also coincide with the decision to sunset and eventually close Fortnite's Rocket Racing, Ballistic, and Festival Battle Stage modes. Epic explained in a post that these modes failed to "attract and retain a large player base" with sufficient "awesomeness." Ballistic and Festival Battle Stage are slated for closure on April 16, with Rocket Racing following in October.
The pressing question remains: what further cuts will be deemed necessary to ensure the long-term viability of Fortnite and Epic Games?
