Finland Boosts Border Security with €5M EU-Funded Counter-Drone System
The Finnish Border Guard has entered into an agreement with the Finnish company Sensofusion Oy to procure a state-of-the-art counter-drone system. This significant acquisition, valued at approximately 5 million euros with 90% funding from the European Union, is set to substantially enhance Finland's border control capabilities and security in response to the growing threat posed by unauthorized drones.
The newly acquired anti-drone system will be instrumental in maintaining robust border security, safeguarding the Border Guard's assets and operations, preventing and investigating criminal activities, conducting critical maritime rescue missions, and upholding Finland's territorial integrity. Its advanced capabilities include detecting, locating, identifying, and, when necessary, neutralizing drones engaged in illegal or hostile operations.
Major General Jari Tolppanen, Head of the Technical Department, emphasized the strategic importance of this development: "While this acquisition is a crucial step, our efforts in this area will continue for years. We are already preparing for additional investments totaling tens of millions of euros in drone countermeasures. We value the opportunity to develop security technologies and ecosystems in partnership with the industry, prioritizing technological sovereignty and security of supply."
Tuomas Rasila, CEO of Sensofusion Oy, a long-standing leader in detecting and countering unauthorized drone activity, welcomed the agreement. He noted, "Our collaboration dates back to Sensofusion's early days, underscoring the Border Guard's vital role in our company's development."
The formal agreement between the Finnish Border Guard and Sensofusion Oy was signed on March 24, 2026.
