Gianpiero Lambiase, Max Verstappen's Race Engineer and Confidant, Set to Join McLaren

Gianpiero Lambiase, who has worked intimately with Max Verstappen as his race engineer at Red Bull and, since 2024, as the team's Head of Race, has made the decision to depart the team and join rivals McLaren. However, his move will not occur until the conclusion of 2027, marking the end of his current contract with Red Bull. In 2028, he is expected to transition to McLaren, reportedly for an 'astronomical offer.'

This news represents a significant setback for Max Verstappen, given that Lambiase is considered one of his closest allies within Red Bull, frequently referred to as his 'right-hand man.' Lambiase has been Verstappen's engineer since the Dutch driver's promotion from Toro Rosso in 2016. Their partnership was pivotal in guiding Verstappen to an impressive four consecutive Formula 1 World Championship titles between 2021 and 2024.

Verstappen articulated his profound appreciation for Lambiase last December, following the hypothetical conclusion of the 2025 season where he lost the championship to Lando Norris. "Of course, he is my race engineer, but I see him as my friend. We have experienced so many emotional moments and fantastic achievements together. I'm sure he was a bit emotional after the flag. So, I'm really looking forward to getting away from here and catching up with him because it hasn't always been easy for him," Verstappen stated. "I'm just very proud to be able to work with someone so good. He's a perfect example of someone who never gave up this season, even in difficult times."

Max Verstappen, known for his outspoken criticism of new sporting regulations, has previously hinted at an early retirement from Formula 1, citing a diminishing enjoyment for driving. Should Lambiase ultimately depart, it could further diminish Verstappen's motivation to remain in the sport, although they are fortunate to still have the 2026 and 2027 seasons left to work together.
