Greek Firefighters Battle Massive Blaze Northwest of Athens

August 4, 2026Carlos Mendoza1 мин

Following recent reports of widespread wildfires across Europe, including incidents in Crete and the Peloponnese that claimed the lives of three firefighters, a new, massive blaze has erupted northwest of Athens.

Approximately 400 firefighters, supported by 21 aircraft, have been battling the extensive forest fire for four consecutive days. Fierce and unpredictable winds are fanning the flames, driving them through pine forests, agricultural land, and into neighboring villages. Similar to events in other countries, evacuations by both land and sea are underway.

Tragically, the ongoing crisis has been compounded by the loss of two crew members when a firefighting helicopter crashed near Psatha after a mid-air collision with another helicopter. This incident occurred while Greece was still reeling from the earlier deaths of firefighters. The nation's response is under immense strain, facing challenges from both the weather and infrastructure issues. Strong winds have hampered efforts by water-bombing planes to scoop seawater, while firefighting teams are already exhausted. Furthermore, faulty power lines are being identified as a significant contributing factor to recent fires.
