Holger Rune Set for Return After Seven-Month Injury Layoff
Holger Rune, Denmark's top tennis player, currently ranked 29th globally but having reached a career-high of world number 4 in 2023, has officially announced his return to the professional tennis circuit. This comeback follows an Achilles tendon injury he sustained last October, which sidelined him for seven months. The 22-year-old has scheduled his return for the ATP 500 Hamburg 2026 tournament, set to run from May 17th to 23rd, marking his re-entry during the clay-court season.
Last year, Holger Rune clinched his fifth and most recent title by defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the Barcelona Open, an achievement that propelled him back into the top 10, reaching ninth place. However, just a few months later at the Stockholm Open, Rune was unfortunately forced to withdraw from a semi-final match against Ugo Humbert. This withdrawal led to a significant loss of ranking points. His ranking is anticipated to drop further as he will be unable to defend the 500 points from his Barcelona Open victory, with that tournament taking place next week.
The upcoming ATP 500 Hamburg event will mark Rune's third appearance in the tournament. High-profile players such as Alexander Zverev and the reigning champion Flavio Cobolli are also expected to participate, setting the stage for an exciting competition.
