While this proposed merger has garnered some support, major Hollywood figures express strong opposition to the consolidation of two colossal studios.
A powerful open letter, signed by a host of prominent Hollywood talent, voices unequivocal opposition to the proposed merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. Among the signatories are esteemed names such as Pedro Pascal, Ben Stiller, Marisa Tomei, Denis Villeneuve, Yorgos Lanthimos, Kristen Stewart, Bryan Cranston, Glenn Close, Mark Ruffalo, and Rosario Dawson, among many others.
The letter argues that "media consolidation has accelerated the disappearance of the mid-budget film, the erosion of independent distribution, the collapse of the international sales market, the elimination of significant profit participation, and the weakening of on-screen credit integrity." It further asserts that the industry is already under immense strain due to consolidation, and this merger would exacerbate these challenges.
Despite the merger appearing to be on track, significant opposition is mounting. The open letter highlights the actions of California Attorney General Rob Bonta, who is reportedly considering legal action to prevent Paramount's acquisition.
