IOC Lifts Provisional Ban on Russian Olympic Committee, Opening Door for 2028 Los Angeles Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has provisionally lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC). This move is expected to clear the path for Russia's participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.

This decision comes after an "in-depth analysis," which considered the fact that the ROC "no longer includes among its members regional sports organizations located on territories under the jurisdiction of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine."

This development follows a similar decision made by the IOC a few months prior regarding Belarus. In that instance, Belarusian athletes were permitted to compete under their national flag and with their national anthem. Other sports organizations, such as World Aquatics and the Paralympic Committee, had already allowed Russian athletes to participate in the Winter Olympics in February, a decision that had sparked significant controversy.

IOC President Kirsty Coventry stated during a press conference, "We do not condone any war, including this one. We will continue to support Ukraine as we have done since the beginning of this conflict. However, I do not believe that athletes should pay the price." She further added, "We do not want to hold athletes responsible for the actions of their government."

The IOC's exclusion of the Russian Olympic Committee had been in effect since October 12, 2023, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The IOC also welcomed the ROC's declaration that it would not conduct any activities on Ukrainian territory.
