Italian Court Rules Netflix Price Hikes Illegal, Mandates Refunds
Many Netflix subscribers in Italy are now poised to receive significant refunds after a court ruled several of the company's price increases between 2017 and 2024 were unlawful. This decision could lead to reimbursements of up to 500 euros per user.
The core issue stems from Netflix allegedly raising prices without providing clear justification within its terms of service. This practice constitutes a major violation under Italian consumer law. The court found that Netflix's terms essentially granted the company free rein to alter prices without transparency, thereby deeming the increases unfair and directly disloyal.
Details from the ruling indicate that the cumulative illegal increases for the premium plan in 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2024 amount to €8 per month. For the standard plan, these increases total €4 per month. Consequently, a premium subscriber who maintained their service uninterrupted since 2017 could be eligible for a refund of approximately €500, while a standard customer could receive around €250. The basic plan was also affected by an illegal €2 increase in October 2024.
This means long-term subscribers, especially those on the Premium tier, could anticipate substantial refunds. Furthermore, Netflix is also mandated to lower its current prices. Unsurprisingly, the streaming giant is displeased with the outcome and has already declared its intention to appeal the ruling.
Similar legal actions have reportedly begun to surface in other European countries, suggesting this could be the start of a broader trend and a potential 'domino effect' across the entire streaming industry.
