Italy's Football Federation in Turmoil After Failed Andrea Pirlo Recruitment Attempt Leads to Resignations
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is experiencing a period of significant upheaval. Following unsuccessful attempts to recruit Pep Guardiola as the new national team coach, a role also declined by Carlo Ancelotti, the FIGC turned its attention to Andrea Pirlo. Pirlo, who managed Juventus between 2020 and 2021 and is currently with Dubai United, was initially considered an ideal choice, with reports suggesting the deal was all but done.
However, the FIGC ultimately withdrew its offer due to Pirlo's association with Fonbet, a Russian betting company with close ties to Vladimir Putin. Pirlo has served as Fonbet's global ambassador since 2025. News of Pirlo's potential appointment sparked widespread outrage on social media and in political circles. Pirlo himself responded to the collapsed offer, explaining on social media that his collaboration with Fonbet was solely related to his role in Dubai and carried no political implications. He stated, "To suggest that I support Russia would be to 'attribute to me convictions that I have never expressed and that do not correspond to me.'"
In the aftermath of this failed recruitment of Andrea Pirlo – an offer made without apparently considering his commercial ties, which already made him a controversial figure in Italy as a football legend closely linked to Russia and Putin – FIGC's technical directors, Paolo Maldini (appointed just two weeks prior) and Leonardo Araújo, have resigned.
Now, the President of the Italian Federation, Giovanni Malagò, who was recently appointed in June, faces the urgent task of finding a new candidate. Italy is set to resume competition in the Nations League in September and October, and the team has been without a coach since Gennaro Gattuso's resignation in April, following their failure to qualify for the World Cup.
