Roberto Martínez was among the 12 national team coaches who stepped down during the World Cup, resigning after Portugal's elimination by Spain in the round of 16. His replacement was quickly announced: Jorge Jesus, who has signed a four-year contract until 2030. This tenure will include the next World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in Portugal, Spain, and Morocco.

Jorge Fernando Pinheiro de Jesus, 71, has been a coach since 1990. Most recently, he coached in Saudi Arabia, first at Al-Hilal and then at Al-Nassr for the 2025/26 season. He previously stated he accepted the Al-Nassr position for one sole reason: to help Cristiano Ronaldo win the Saudi Pro League, a goal he achieved.

Now, Jorge Jesus might reunite with Cristiano Ronaldo. However, at 41 years old, it's unlikely Ronaldo will still be playing for the next World Cup or the UEFA Euro in 2028. Nevertheless, on Friday, Jesus stated, "As long as he plays and is in a condition to be selected, I will choose him, within certain limits and according to the conditions I deem best for the national team." He also described Ronaldo as someone easy to work with and a "symbol of Portuguese football."

Jesus's first match in charge of Portugal will be a Nations League fixture against Wales on September 24th.
