Los Angeles Lakers Again on the Market: Josh Kushner and Bob Iger Emerge as Buyers for $12.5 Billion
The Los Angeles Lakers are once again up for sale. It was only 10 months ago that the NBA approved the sale of the basketball franchise for $10 billion, with the Buss family, who had owned the team since 1979, selling it to Mark Walter, CEO of TWG Global holdings.
However, it has now been revealed that Josh Kushner and Bob Iger are set to acquire a majority stake in this iconic team, driving the price up to $12.5 billion. Josh Kushner is the brother of Jared, the son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump (and was reportedly involved in FIFA's initial plans to sell World Cup shares to investors), while Bob Iger served as the former CEO of The Walt Disney Company from 2005 to 2020 and again from 2022 to 2026.
"As lifelong NBA fans, we are incredibly honored to have the opportunity to lead the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world. We have immense respect for the leadership and vision of Jerry and Jeanie Buss," Kushner and Iger stated in a joint press release. "Our long-term commitment is to build upon this foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles."
The sale of a majority stake in the Los Angeles Lakers for $12.5 billion makes it the most expensive sale of a sports club or team in history, surpassing the team's previous sale last year at $10 billion and the Seattle Seahawks' sale this year at $9.6 billion, according to ESPN.
