The Marvel Cinematic Universe's take on the X-Men has been a long time coming. With anticipation building for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars, a new roster of heroes is on the horizon. This resurgence inevitably raises questions about whether anyone other than Hugh Jackman can truly embody Wolverine. The project faces immense pressure and appears to require multiple script iterations to meet expectations.
Director Jake Schreier recently confirmed that a new script for the X-Men film is currently being penned by Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo, known for their acclaimed work on Beef and Thunderbolts. Schreier noted that the film remains "in development," but the current plan still targets a 2028 release.
Having also directed Thunderbolts, Schreier expressed particular excitement about reuniting with Calo and Jin for this pivotal project. He elaborated on their collaboration, stating, "You know, one of the exciting things connected to Beef is that Sonny [Lee Sung Jin] and Joanna [Calo] both worked on that season. Obviously, Beef is Sonny's show, and Joanna also worked on the season, and we worked together on Beef Season 1 and Thunderbolts. They've come on board and are working on a draft right now, which is really exciting to be able to bring that group of people back together."
While Schreier did not comment on whether this new script would affect the release schedule, he affirmed that Marvel intends to keep the details of the new X-Men film under tight wraps. He quipped about the secrecy, "We'll film in a small black box and never come out. But seriously, the studio has experience with this. We've talked about it, but I can't say more."
