New Poll: Only 33% of Americans Support Trump's War in Iran
As President Trump's military operations in Iran enter their fifth month, public support among Americans for the president's actions is waning. A new poll indicates that only one in three Americans openly supports Trump's war, while others express confusion regarding the administration's motivations in Iran.
The survey, conducted by Reuters, found that 33% of adults approve of the war, with 5% offering no response and 62% expressing disapproval. Unsurprisingly, support is strongest among Republicans, with 71% of surveyed adults stating they back the war. However, four in ten Republicans believe Trump has not "clearly explained the objectives of the US military intervention in Iran" since the conflict began.
The stated objectives in Iran have shifted since the war commenced. Initially, Trump encouraged the Iranian people to overthrow their leaders, then expressed a desire to destroy the country's missile silos, and now aims to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
"What matters most to Americans is having a commander-in-chief who takes bold action to ensure their safety," stated White House spokesperson Olivia Wales when asked about the poll. Compared to other recent conflicts in US history, the war in Iran is garnering significantly less support. In their initial months, the 2003 Iraq War and the 2001 Afghanistan War enjoyed 70% and 90% favorable opinions, respectively.
