New York School Halts AI Teacher Robot Project Due to Manufacturer's Sex Robot Ties
A New York school district has put a pause on its initiative to purchase and utilize an AI-powered teacher robot after a backlash from parents. The Salamanca City Central School District had intended to introduce "Sally," a $60,000 humanoid robot from the company Realbotix, as a classroom assistant. However, parents raised concerns regarding student data privacy and the robot manufacturer's other products.
Some parents expressed apprehension about their children interacting with a machine capable of storing personal data. Others objected to the project upon learning that Realbotix has a history of manufacturing "intimacy dolls" and even "sex robots."
The district has clarified that the project is "on hold" rather than definitively canceled. In the meantime, officials state they are working on implementing stricter agreements concerning student data privacy and are actively consulting with the community. The superintendent also emphasized that a robot should never replace a human teacher.
