Nintendo Switch 2 Set to Launch This Autumn with Replaceable Batteries
In response to European Union regulations concerning planned obsolescence, recycling, and repairability, requiring easily replaceable batteries in electronic devices, Nintendo is updating its popular Switch console line. Previously, the Nintendo Switch did not meet these requirements. It has now been confirmed that an updated version, the Nintendo Switch 2, will be released to comply with these new standards.
Nintendo announced on its support page that updated products, including the Nintendo Switch 2 consoles and Joy-Con controllers with user-replaceable batteries, will begin appearing in stores starting in the summer of 2026. Consumers will be able to replace these batteries themselves using kits available through the Nintendo Store.
Interestingly, Nintendo has confirmed that the new console batteries will not offer higher capacity than current ones. In fact, they will have a slightly lower capacity by 1% (5,172 mAh compared to the current 5,200 mAh). These new batteries, as well as the updated Joy-Con controllers, will also be slightly heavier.
While a detailed roadmap for Nintendo's updated products is available, it's important to note that those looking to purchase a Switch 2 model with a replaceable battery will need to wait until the autumn, when they are expected to start arriving in stores. The updated Joy-Con 2 controllers will be gradually rolled out throughout the winter. Furthermore, the Nintendo 64 and Nintendo GameCube controllers for the Nintendo Switch 2 will be discontinued by early 2027.
End of Nintendo Switch in Europe
Nintendo has also confirmed that production and sales of the original Nintendo Switch (including standard, Lite, and OLED models) will cease in February 2027. Until then, these consoles will continue to be manufactured and remain available across Europe. The company assures customers that "the Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Switch Online, and other services will remain available in the foreseeable future."
Will you be opting for the Nintendo Switch 2 with its replaceable batteries? Are you considering replacing any of your current controllers due to this change?
