Nirmal Purja Among 10 Climbers Lost in Broad Peak Avalanche; Tributes Pour In
Following arduous search efforts, the bodies of ten climbers, tragically swept away by an avalanche on Pakistan's Broad Peak, the world's 12th highest mountain, have been recovered. Among the deceased was Nirmal Purja, a highly acclaimed Nepalese and British mountaineer celebrated for numerous record-breaking achievements. These included being the first to summit Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu in under 48 hours, and holding the record for the fastest ascent of all 14 8,000-meter peaks in six months and six days, an feat documented in the Netflix film "14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible."
This devastating incident marks the deadliest accident ever recorded on Broad Peak. Irfan Arshad Khan, president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, stated, "The loss of these brave climbers, hailing from different nations and united by their passion for the mountains, is an immeasurable loss to the global mountaineering community."
The Prime Minister of Nepal, Balendra Shah, also paid tribute to Purja and all the victims, including five Nepalese nationals, remarking, "Purja's story, characterized by his courage, dedication, and contributions, will forever serve as a source of inspiration."
Guinness World Records similarly honored Purja, highlighting his extensive list of records, such as the most ascents to the true summit of 8,000-meter peaks (49 ascents as of September 2025) and being the oldest person to summit Everest-Lhotse without supplemental oxygen. Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief at Guinness World Records, commented, "Nims continuously pushed the boundaries of human capability, pioneering a style of mountaineering that challenged him and the entire climbing fraternity."
Perhaps the most touching tribute came from Kamal, Purja's brother, who posted on Facebook: "It feels like I have lost my entire universe. My brother was not just my younger sibling, he was my heart. While our hearts are broken, we are incredibly proud of you. Your legacy will forever be etched in our memories."
