Prevent Meta from Using Your Instagram Posts for AI-Generated Deepfakes

July 11, 2026Carlos Mendoza1 мин

Meta has quietly implemented a concerning change on Instagram, now utilizing your photos to generate AI-powered content. This means your images could be used by anyone to create AI-generated visuals of you. The potential for misuse, particularly with deepfakes, is significant, but this appears to be a secondary concern for Meta.

This feature was activated without explicit user consent. If you wish to opt out, you are required to actively unsubscribe, rather than the more logical approach of requiring opt-in. The American actors' and artists' union, SAG-AFTRA, has now recognized this issue and is offering guidance on how to prevent Meta from using your photos for AI-related purposes.

Fortunately, opting out is a quick process, taking approximately 30 seconds.

Here's how to do it:

  • Open Instagram and tap on your profile icon (bottom right).
  • Tap the three lines (☰) in the top right corner.
  • Scroll down and select "Sharing and replies" (or the equivalent in your language).
  • Find the option: "Allow people to reuse your content on Instagram and with Meta AI features."
  • Disable both toggles for "Posts" and "Reels" – and you're done!

By taking these steps, Meta will no longer be able to permit others to use your photos and images to generate AI-created visuals. Unfortunately, this setting does not affect images already created, only future ones, so act quickly.
