Public Television Goes Offline in Hungary

July 9, 2026Carlos Mendoza1 мин

One of Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar's stated goals was to overhaul and reform public broadcasting in Hungary, which he alleged had become a platform for propaganda loyal to Viktor Orbán. This objective appears to have been realized, as attempts to tune into the main public channel, M1, now result in a black screen accompanied by the message:

"Public service media must not lie. We apologize for having lied for many years."

However, the intention is not to abolish public service broadcasting in Hungary. Instead, new personnel are set to be appointed, and a program designed to ensure impartiality will be introduced. While many are welcoming this development, there is also a hope that the new leadership will dare to maintain the independence of public service broadcasting and refrain from seeking to exploit it indirectly.
