Resident Evil 2 Becomes The Series' Best-Selling Game

Capcom has announced that the Resident Evil 2 remake has achieved a significant milestone, becoming the best-selling game in the franchise's history. This marks a historic shift, as it overtakes Resident Evil 5, which held the top spot for 17 years.

For a considerable period, Resident Evil 5 was recognized as the series' top seller with 19 million copies sold, despite some mixed reception. However, Capcom's latest quarterly report indicates a monumental change. The remake of Resident Evil 2 has now claimed the title of the best-selling Resident Evil game of all time.

While Capcom has not officially commented on these specific figures, a reputable Capcom insider shared insights on ResetEra. According to this source, Resident Evil 2 (RE:2) has sold approximately 19.75 million units. In comparison, Resident Evil 5 (RE5) stood at 19.01 million copies sold as of the last quarter. Even with generous assumptions about RE5's continued sales, it would still fall short of RE:2's current total, placing RE:2 firmly in the lead.

The Resident Evil 2 remake, released in 2019, has managed to achieve this remarkable feat in just seven years, surpassing the decade-long reign of Resident Evil 5, which was originally launched in 2009.

Furthermore, another noteworthy development is that the Resident Evil series as a whole has now exceeded the sales of another long-standing Japanese giant, Final Fantasy. Square Enix's renowned RPG series has sold 212 million copies to date. Resident Evil, however, can now boast a total of 213 million units sold, making it the best-selling Japanese game series outside of Nintendo's major franchises like Mario and Pokémon.
