Roberto Mancini Set to Become Italy's New Coach, Technical Director Appointed

Roberto Mancini is reportedly the leading candidate to be appointed the new manager of the Italian national football team. According to a Reuters report, Mancini's nomination is imminent and is expected to be finalized soon, following a decision by Giovanni Malagò, the federation's president appointed in June. The Italian squad has been without a permanent head coach since Gennaro Gattuso's resignation in April, which followed their defeat against Bosnia and Herzegovina and their failure to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time.

This decision was made after a meeting of the Italian Federal Council held on Tuesday. The move comes after unsuccessful attempts to recruit Pep Guardiola and Andrea Pirlo. Pirlo's potential appointment was nearly confirmed until a controversy emerged regarding his commercial ties with a Russian betting company linked to Putin. Consequently, the offer to Pirlo was withdrawn, leading to the resignations of technical directors Paolo Maldini and Leonardo Araújo. During Tuesday's meeting, Claudio Ranieri was also named the federation's new technical director.

Roberto Mancini, who previously managed the Italian national team from 2018 to 2023, led them to victory in Euro 2020, which was Italy's last major title since their 2006 World Cup triumph. Following his tenure with Italy, Mancini became the coach of Saudi Arabia in 2024-2025 and most recently managed Al-Sadd.
