Ce dernier souhaiterait rejoindre une équipe dont le style de jeu lui correspond mieux et retrouver plusieurs de ses coéquipiers de l'équipe nationale espagnole, récemment vainqueurs de la Coupe du Monde. Selon plusieurs médias, Rodri a officiellement communiqué sa décision aux trois clubs. Barcelone travaillerait désormais sur un transfert qui pourrait s'élever à 60 millions d'euros.
Ces événements coïncident avec l'annonce par le Real Madrid de la signature de Yan Diomande. L'ailier de 19 ans est devenu le joueur le plus cher de l'histoire du club, avec un montant estimé à environ 135 millions d'euros, incluant diverses variables.
