Russia Issues International Arrest Warrant for Telegram Founder Pavel Durov
Pavel Durov, the founder of the messaging application Telegram, has been indicted by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) for allegedly facilitating terrorist activities. Consequently, an international arrest warrant has been issued for Durov.
Shortly after the warrant's announcement, Telegram's official Twitter/X account posted a picture of Durov giving the middle finger to the camera, without further comment. According to Reuters, the FSB's pursuit of Durov stems from Telegram's alleged failure to remove content "used by Ukrainian special services and terrorist and extremist organizations to prepare and coordinate acts of sabotage and terrorism, massacres, and cyber fraud operations within the Russian Federation."
Telegram, with over a billion users, has been utilized by both sides in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Russia has also attempted to promote its state-backed MAX application as an alternative to Telegram. Despite this, the Kremlin and other state bodies continue to maintain a presence on Telegram for their communications.
Durov is also under investigation by French authorities amid allegations that Telegram has not adequately combatted criminal activities on its platform. Durov's current whereabouts are unknown, and he denies any wrongdoing.
