However, since 1986, a global decision by countries worldwide to nearly completely ban whaling has begun to yield positive results. While a few nations continue this practice to some extent, the vast majority adhere to the moratorium.
Thanks to this international effort, large whale populations have started to recover. AP News recently reported on an extraordinary sighting by a South African couple: a "supergroup" of nearly 300 humpback whales. Els Vermeulen, a lead researcher at the University of Pretoria, commented on this phenomenon, stating, "In general, the moratorium on whaling can be considered one of the greatest successes in marine environmental conservation."
It is important to acknowledge that not all species have fully recovered, and ongoing conflicts, such as the war in Iran, continue to negatively impact marine life. Nevertheless, the observable signs indicate that the situation for whales is moving in a positive direction.
