Sinner Dethrones Alcaraz in ATP Rankings, Extends Masters 1000 Streak
Jannik Sinner has reclaimed the world No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings, following his victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the Monte-Carlo Masters final. The final score was 7-6(5), 6-3. This marks a significant moment as Alcaraz was on the cusp of matching Sinner's total weeks at the top. Alcaraz had just completed 66 weeks as world No. 1, a tally Sinner held before this week. Sinner will now begin his 67th week at the pinnacle of men's tennis.
However, the top ranking could shift again as early as next Monday. Sinner is scheduled to rest, while Alcaraz will compete in the Barcelona Open, where he defends 330 ranking points from reaching the final last year. Should Alcaraz win the Conde de Godó Trophy, he would reclaim the world No. 1 position.
Beyond the ATP rankings race, Jannik Sinner has also surpassed Alcaraz in the "Race to Turin" standings for the year. Sinner has accumulated 3,900 points, including three Masters 1000 titles. This puts him ahead of Alcaraz, who has 3,600 points, largely earned from his victories at the Australian Open and the Doha Open (ATP 500). Sinner boasts a season record of 24 wins and 2 losses, while Alcaraz holds a 21-3 record.
Furthermore, Sinner has achieved a remarkable feat, equaling Novak Djokovic's 2015 record. He is now the second player in history to win the first three Masters 1000 events of the year: Indian Wells, Monte-Carlo, and Miami. Considering his victory at last year's Paris Masters, Sinner has now won the last four Masters 1000 trophies.
