Sony Explains Decision to Discontinue PlayStation Physical Media
Sony has announced plans to cease the production of physical PlayStation media starting January 2028. This decision has sparked significant backlash and disappointment among many fans. The gaming community has even organized a boycott of PlayStation services in late August to protest what they perceive as an anti-consumer move.
During a recent financial results conference call, Sony's Chief Financial Officer, Lin Tao, addressed the controversial decision. He stated, "We made this decision for several reasons, the main one being that the digitalization of content in general is progressing, and this is the determining factor. This doesn't only concern PlayStation, but all types of content: digitalization is advancing."
Tao further elaborated on the company's thoughtful approach, noting that they have "dedicated a lot of thought and time" and "examined the issue carefully" before reaching this conclusion. He acknowledged the diverse and strong opinions from the community, understanding that "games are appreciated by many people. It is a form of entertainment that people love, and which is often linked to good memories." Sony aims to take these sentiments into account and will continue to explore ways to "interact with players in the future digital ecosystem."
It's worth noting that the community's frustration may not fully align with current consumption trends. Capcom recently reported that over 93% of its game sales in the last quarter were digital, with expectations for this figure to rise to 95% by the end of the year.
