Sony's Surprise Move: Publishers Unaware of Physical Game Phase-Out

The imminent end of physical games, with Sony slated to cease disc production by January 2028, remains a significant topic of discussion. A recent report from High Chaos Run reveals that even Sony's closest collaborators, including publishers and business partners, were kept in the dark about this impending decision.

One executive from a major AAA publisher stated, "Despite our seemingly close working relationship with PlayStation, we were not forewarned about what was going to happen. We are only now beginning to realize that we might be out of a job sooner than expected."

The situation appears to have been particularly dire in India. Plans were in motion to open 100 PlayStation stores in 2028, a project that had been extensively worked on. However, this initiative will now be scrapped. An interviewed investor expressed dismay, saying, "Why would we work with PlayStation, let alone invest millions of rupees in a store, if they aren't even selling discs? The worst part is that PlayStation India didn't even inform us before it became public, yet they continued to urge us to invest. They themselves were unaware."

While the ultimate decision rests with Sony, and there was always a risk of information leaks, this incident highlights a decision made solely based on Sony's interests, with no prior consultation with its partners.
