South Korea Deploys Drones in Rural Areas to Monitor Health of Farmers and Elderly
The South Korean government is taking the current summer's rising temperatures very seriously and has launched an aerial surveillance system to safeguard the health of rural residents, particularly the elderly who often continue to work the land.
A fleet of drones, outfitted with loudspeakers and thermal cameras, has been deployed over the North Gyeongsang region, a significant agricultural area. In this province, individuals aged 65 and older constitute 59.2% of farming households.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has described the current heatwave as a "national disaster" and ordered a large-scale mobilization as the number of heat-related deaths climbed to 21. Temperatures in this eastern province, a key farming hub, reached a scorching 41.2 degrees Celsius.
The extreme heat is not only impacting farmers but is also projected to reduce summer crop yields by as much as 30%.
