Sri Lankan Prison Gang War Claims Over 25 Lives, Hundreds Injured
A riot at Negombo Prison in Sri Lanka, sparked by a clash between rival gangs, has persisted for over two days. The death toll has now risen to more than 25, including six prison officers. The confrontations began on Sunday and escalated on Monday, as riot police worked to quell the unrest. The prison, currently holding 2,400 inmates serving both long-term and shorter sentences, is undergoing evacuation as of this report.
Relatives of the inmates gathered outside the prison perimeter but were dispersed by the police. A spokesperson for the Prisons Ministry informed journalists, as reported by Reuters, that the violence is linked to drug trafficking and that an investigation is underway.
The Minister of Justice and National Integration, Harshana Nanayakkara, expressed his condolences to the victims' families. "I am aware that weapons have fallen into the hands of inmates, but at this moment, I do not know the exact number," he stated.
