Story of Seasons Mobile Game Canceled as Marvelous Ends Tencent Partnership
The partnership between Japanese company Marvelous and Chinese conglomerate Tencent has officially concluded. Tencent, following a strategic review of its capital allocation policies, determined that continued investment in Marvelous was no longer financially viable, bringing their collaboration to an end.
As reported by GameBiz, this six-year-long agreement dissolved due to Tencent's revised investment portfolio. Consequently, Image Frame Investment, a Tencent subsidiary, is now looking to divest its stake in Marvelous.
A significant repercussion of this decision is the cancellation of the planned mobile game, "Story of Seasons." Development on this title had been underway since 2019, the year the original licensing agreement was established.
Tencent has been notably scaling back its international investment activities recently, and this development appears to be the latest manifestation of that trend. While these investment adjustments have historically focused on Western markets, Japan is now experiencing their effects. This suggests that Marvelous may not be the sole Japanese company previously supported by Tencent to face adverse consequences.
