Student Creates First All-British Chocolate Bar in Nearly a Century
While the UK boasts iconic chocolate brands like Cadbury and Bournville, the treat itself isn't typically a homegrown product, as cocoa beans are always sourced from warmer climates abroad. In fact, the last time a chocolate bar was made entirely from ingredients cultivated within the United Kingdom was in 1932. That year, confectionery giant Rowntree's presented a unique, UK-made chocolate bar to a six-year-old Princess Elizabeth, long before her reign as Queen.
As this centenary approaches, a student from the University of Reading has made headlines by producing the first chocolate bar made from ingredients grown in the UK in almost a century. According to BBC News, Maha Khan, a Master's student, has successfully created a confection using British ingredients, including cocoa beans that were grown, harvested, fermented, and processed locally in Reading.
Reflecting on her achievement, Maha Khan stated, "It's incredible that we can make 100% British chocolate – but with climate change, pests, and diseases, it's estimated that 30-40% of the crop is lost. And we've seen with these heatwaves: climate change is only going to worsen these issues and challenges."
The implications for British chocolate initiatives remain somewhat unclear, as importing cocoa from South America, Africa, or Asia is likely to remain more cost-effective. However, this development may offer an alternative for the UK's chocolate industry, which is valued at approximately £10.4 billion but still relies heavily on imported ingredients.
