Suspected Drone Crashes in Lithuania Near Belarus Border, Sparks Security Review
Lithuania has reported that a suspected drone entered its airspace before crashing onto a frozen lake close to the Belarusian border, prompting an immediate security assessment.
According to the Lithuanian military, debris recovered from a hole in the ice is believed to be from the downed unmanned aerial vehicle. Footage broadcast by the national media outlet LRT reportedly captured the drone's sound followed by an explosion, showing fragments scattering.
Military officials suggest that Belarus is the most probable origin of the drone, given the crash site's proximity, approximately 20 kilometers from the border. However, no explosives have been detected at the scene so far.
The incident led to an emergency meeting of the National Security Commission, convened by Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, to evaluate the unfolding situation.
This event further exacerbates regional tensions. As a NATO member, Lithuania has previously called for stronger air defenses, citing similar drone incursions in the past.
An investigation into the cause of this incident is currently underway.
