Tadej Pogačar confirmed for La Vuelta a España comeback after seven-year absence
UAE Team Emirates has announced news that will excite many cycling fans and undoubtedly shake up the competition: Tadej Pogačar is set to participate in this year's Vuelta a España.
This will be only his second appearance in the Spanish Grand Tour, marking his return after a seven-year gap.
It was precisely at the 2019 Vuelta that a then 20-year-old Pogačar first captured the world's attention. As a relatively unknown rider with little experience in three-week races, he achieved an astonishing feat: winning three stages, clinching the white jersey for the best young rider, and finishing third overall behind Primož Roglič and Alejandro Valverde.
Just ten months later, Pogačar secured his first of what would become five Tour de France victories. Since then, he has been a dominant force in professional cycling, triumphing in nearly every race he enters, including World Championships, four of the five Monuments (some multiple times), and is now widely regarded as one of the greatest cyclists of all time.
Last year, Pogačar admitted to feeling too fatigued after the Tour de France, which led him to skip La Vuelta once again. However, this year marks his highly anticipated return to Spain for a race that commences on August 22nd with a time trial in Monaco, where the Slovenian rider resides. His presence is expected to be a chilling prospect for many competitors, given that Pogačar is consistently the favorite in any race he contests.
