Tadej Pogačar Takes Yellow Jersey from Vingegaard, Leads Tour de France After Stage 3
The 2026 Tour de France moved from Catalonia with a demanding Stage 3, spanning nearly 200 kilometers. This stage featured four significant climbs: one Category 1 and three Category 3 ascents, contributing to an elevation gain of approximately 3,850 to 3,900 meters. The finish line was set in Les Angles, a location where the public was absent due to nearby wildfires. This initial major test of the race was dominated by Tadej Pogačar of UAE Team Emirates, who secured his first victory of the year and claimed the coveted yellow jersey, taking the lead from Jonas Vingegaard of Visma | Lease a Bike.
Vingegaard had previously held the overall lead after winning the team time trial in Barcelona and finishing with the same time as Pogačar in Stage 2. In that previous stage, the Slovenian rider had played a crucial role in assisting his UAE Emirates teammate, Isaac del Toro, in achieving his first Tour de France stage win. The Mexican rider, who was instrumental in helping Pogačar sprint to the finish line, maintained his hold on the white jersey as the best young rider.
However, during Stage 3, Pogačar proved relentless in the final sprint to the finish line. He crossed the line two seconds ahead of Vingegaard, thereby seizing the top position in the general classification. Richard Carapaz from EF Education-EasyPost and Paul Seixas from Decathlon finished at the same time as Vingegaard.
Pogačar now leads the general classification, tied on time with Vingegaard at 8 hours, 46 minutes, and 55 seconds. Following closely behind, within a minute of the leaders, are five other riders: Remco Evenepoel, Isaac del Toro, Juan Ayuso, Paul Seixas, and Florian Lipowitz.
