Taiwan Diplomatic Delegation Joins Coast Guard Patrol Near Chinese Waters

Recent months have seen a notable increase in tensions between China and Taiwan over the latter's sovereignty. This is occurring within a global climate of cooling diplomatic relations between Asian, American, and European blocs. While international attention is focused on conflicts in Russia, Ukraine, and between Iran and the United States, China is intensifying its pressure on Taiwan. The People's Republic of China is deploying more military personnel and equipment near Taiwan, compelling the island to rearm and seek military assistance from its allies.

On Thursday, a diplomatic delegation accompanied the Taiwanese coast guard during a patrol in the waters surrounding the Kinmen Islands. These waters are frequently a point of contention between the two nations, and confrontations between their navies have thus far been limited to verbal warnings exchanged via radio.

Tom Tugendhat, a former UK Security Minister and a vocal critic of China, stated aboard the vessel that his presence there was a significant gesture of support for Taiwan. He remarked, "I am in Taiwan. I am in Taiwanese waters. This is not a matter for Beijing. It is a matter of defending the rules-based international system to which the Chinese government in Beijing claims to adhere."

When questioned about this trip, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared that Beijing strongly opposes parliamentarians from countries that have diplomatic relations with China undertaking "clandestine visits" to Taiwan.

Although no Chinese coast guard vessels were sighted during the visit, the Taiwanese coast guard reported that Chinese ships had conducted one of their routine incursions into Kinmen's waters the previous day.
