The Boys' Showrunner Eric Kripke Wishes Season 5 Was Written After US Elections
While "The Boys" writer and showrunner Eric Kripke is undoubtedly pleased with the fan reception to his superhero series, he expresses a wish that he could have penned its final season at a slightly different moment. Specifically, Kripke conveys his "disappointment" that the show's concluding season was written prior to the 2024 American elections.
In an interview with TV Guide, Kripke disclosed that the initial concept was for viewers to watch the series and feel a sense of relief, imagining they had "dodged a bullet." However, he elaborated, "I swear the plan was 'Let's write a 1984 version of what rampant authoritarianism in America looks like' and maybe everyone would say 'Phew, we really dodged a bullet,' but instead, we got hit by the bullet."
Kripke further noted: "Many things that were outlandish to us have, disturbingly, come true in a truly, truly f*cking troubling way... We always say in the writers' room, 'Bad for the world, good for the show,' but I genuinely wish it were the opposite."
He referenced a particular line delivered by Homelander in Season 5, Episode 7, which at the time seemed to be the most extreme concept they could envision. Yet, he pointed out, that very sentiment has already been echoed in real life. Such, he implies, is the unsettling nature of current events.
