Todd Howard Praises Xbox's Preservation of Classic Bethesda RPGs
While the gaming world continues its eager wait for new installments in The Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises, many players find themselves returning to the beloved classics within Bethesda's extensive library. With only one significant remaster currently available for these iconic series, Todd Howard, the renowned game director, expressed his deep satisfaction that the original versions of these games remain readily accessible and playable.
Howard shared his long-held philosophy on older titles, emphasizing his preference for fully functional originals over extensive remasters. He stated, "For a long time, I've been a 'no, no, no.' It's a game of its age, let's just make sure it works."
Adhering to this principle, Howard is particularly enthusiastic about Xbox's dedicated efforts in game preservation through backward compatibility. "They've done an incredible job with backward compatibility," Howard noted. "Right now, you can jump straight into the original Oblivion, Morrowind, or Fallout 3. They're all backward compatible, running in 4K, which is just great."
Howard did admit to having initial apprehensions regarding The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, acknowledging "a million ways things could have gone wrong." Despite these early concerns, fans largely welcomed the opportunity to revisit Cyrodiil with its visual and mechanical enhancements. This positive reception might potentially open doors for other Bethesda classics to receive similar updates, or perhaps it won't be necessary, given that the original games continue to be fully accessible and enjoyable on modern platforms.
