US Officials Meet Bank Leaders Over AI Cyber Risks
US authorities have summoned major bank executives to Washington amid growing concerns about cybersecurity risks associated with Anthropic's latest AI model. The meeting, reportedly led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, follows shortly after the unveiling of the company's newest system, Claude Mythos.
Attendees include Jerome Powell, alongside leaders from prominent financial institutions such as Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, and Citigroup. The gathering is focused on the potential dangers posed by advanced AI tools capable of identifying and exploiting software vulnerabilities at a level comparable to, or even surpassing, human experts.
Anthropic recently warned that its model had uncovered thousands of previously undetected weaknesses in widely used systems, raising fears that this technology could be misused by cybercriminals. A leak of the model's code earlier this month intensified these worries, with the company acknowledging that the broader impact on economies and national security could be significant.
In response, Anthropic has restricted access to the model to a select group of companies, including major tech firms and infrastructure organizations. This marks the first time the company has limited a product launch.
