Brazil's World Cup journey concluded in disappointment, with the team eliminated in the Round of 16 against Norway. This result matches their all-time worst performance in the competition, as they had consistently reached at least the quarter-finals since their exit at the same stage in Italy in 1990. Vinícius Jr., who emerged as one of the team's standout players with four goals and one assist, released a statement conveying his apologies.

"I've seen so many people of all ages supporting me, sharing our dream, that it would have been unfair to remain silent. But I needed a few days to reflect," he wrote. He explained that, four years later, he still struggled to find words after such a letdown, and felt they possessed a strong enough squad to advance further.

Wearing the national team jersey is the greatest pride of my life, and being eliminated in the Round of 16 is a feeling difficult to explain. I know how much I prepared, how focused I was, how much I wanted this for you, for my family.

The feeling of frustration is immense. We had a group strong enough to go further, and we didn't make it. I apologize and will fight for our dream of returning to the top of the world."

Despite this setback, Carlo Ancelotti is expected to remain in charge of the Brazilian national team, with his contract extended in May 2026 through to after the FIFA World Cup 2030.
