Volkswagen Reaffirms Commitment to Sedans and Hot Hatches
While Volkswagen has certainly moved deep into the SUV era, the company is not abandoning other vehicle segments. Despite crossovers representing the vast majority of its sales, the automaker has confirmed that its sedans and hatchbacks are here to stay.
Speaking at the New York Auto Show, Kjell Gruner, CEO of Volkswagen of America, clarified that the brand has no intention of committing entirely to SUVs. Even though models like the Atlas and Tiguan lead in sales volume, Gruner emphasized the vital role that traditional cars continue to play within the product range.
"There are different roles for different vehicles, and you can't measure success and importance just by volume. You also have to measure it by heartbeats," he declared.
Currently, Volkswagen's lineup of non-utility vehicles is already somewhat limited. In markets such as the United States, this includes the Jetta sedan, performance hatchbacks like the Golf GTI and Golf R, and unique models like the ID. Buzz. However, even with relatively modest sales figures—approximately 10,000 Golf models annually—these beloved cars are not slated for discontinuation.
