Vozinha Hailed as a Hero at New Club Colo Colo: Chile to Make an Exception for Him
Vozinha, the 40-year-old goalkeeper who became an overnight sensation with his outstanding performances for Cape Verde in the 2026 World Cup (including a clean sheet against Spain and a hard-fought match against Argentina), has signed with Chilean powerhouse Colo Colo. During his presentation, he expressed his long-held belief: "Deep down, I always told myself I was a 'big club' player."
He further commented that "representing Colo Colo, a massive club with a rich history, is the pinnacle of my club career." While acknowledging the World Cup as the highlight of his life, he emphasized that it was now in the past. Vozinha revealed that he received numerous offers following the World Cup, where he was selected for the FIFA Best XI, but his heart was set on playing for Colo Colo from the outset.
Vozinha's popularity has surged to such an extent that he was welcomed like a hero in Santiago. The Chilean Football Federation (ANFP) has made a special exception to its regulations. Typically, players are not permitted to display "nicknames, appellations, or sobriquets" on their jerseys. However, they will allow him to wear his nickname, "Vozinha" (which translates to "little grandma" in Portuguese), instead of his official name, Josimar José Évora Dias. Vozinha stated, "If my grandmother were still alive today, I think she would be proud. I hope to be able to continue using it until the end of my career as a tribute to her."
