Warner Bros. Announces New Lord of the Rings Film with Peter Jackson and Stephen Colbert
Over two decades after their release, Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy remains an unparalleled benchmark for epic fantasy films. Eager to extend our stay in Middle-earth, Warner Bros. is inviting us on a new adventure inspired by Tolkien's timeless classic literature.
Unveiled in a video celebrating Tolkien Reading Day, the film, provisionally titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past, is presented as an upcoming sequel designed to fill in certain gaps within Tolkien's original narrative. To avoid merely remaking or treading on established ground, this new production will be a unique continuation, developed by Stephen Colbert, his son Peter McGee, Peter Jackson, and screenwriter Philippa Boyens, who previously contributed to the adaptations of both Tolkien trilogies for Warner Bros.
The official logline for the film states: "Fourteen years after Frodo's passing, Sam, Merry, and Pippin embark on a journey to retrace the initial steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Elanor, Sam's daughter, has uncovered a long-buried secret and is determined to discover why the War of the Ring very nearly was lost before it even began."
The plot will revolve around Colbert's concept of incorporating parts of The Fellowship of the Ring that were omitted from the book's adaptation. Specifically, these are chapters three and six, titled "Three is Company" and "Fog on the Barrow-Downs." As two chapters are insufficient to form an entire film, we can anticipate a much broader narrative exploration. While Shadows of the Past does not yet have an official release date, it is confirmed to arrive after The Hunt for Gollum, which is slated for a 2027 premiere.
