Magyar Party Plans to Halt State Media News Broadcasts

The Hungarian party led by Peter Magyar has announced plans to suspend news broadcasts on public television and radio. This move aims to ensure independent and impartial coverage until new safeguards can be established.

This decision comes shortly after Magyar’s decisive victory, signaling an assertive effort to dismantle what Magyar describes as a politicized media system aligned with the previous government.

Magyar stated that one of his initial actions in office will be to cease state-funded news emissions, which he accuses of serving as “propaganda,” pending the implementation of new guarantees. He also proposed the creation of an independent oversight body, potentially modeled after institutions like the BBC, to ensure editorial neutrality.

“One of the first steps will be to stop the news broadcasts of public television and radio,” he stated. The new administration will seek to establish “a council to guarantee the independence of public media,” drawing inspiration from the BBC’s experience or other similar models.
