Inter Miami, the MLS champions, have appointed Guillermo Hoyos as their new head coach. Javier Mascherano has voluntarily resigned from his position due to personal reasons. The 41-year-old Mascherano, who previously managed Argentina’s U20 and U23 teams before joining Inter Miami in 2024, and who was a former teammate of Leo Messi, Jordi Alba, Luis Suárez, and Sergio Busquets during his eight-season tenure at FC Barcelona, announced his departure on Tuesday. His resignation comes just months after leading the team to an MLS title.
“I will always carry with me the memory of our first star, and wherever I am, I will continue to wish the Club the best for moving forward. I have no doubt that the Club will continue to achieve success in the future,” Mascherano stated in a press release.
Guillermo Hoyos will take over as head coach for the remainder of the season. The 62-year-old Argentine, credited with discovering Lionel Messi during his time coaching FC Barcelona B, has had a distinguished career working in Greece, Cyprus, Bolivia, Chile, the United States, and Mexico. He most recently joined Miami as their sporting director, overseeing and advancing the club’s professional development structure.
Inter Miami has experienced a somewhat challenging start to the 2026 season, with three wins, three losses, and one draw in their opening matches last month. This currently places them third in the Eastern Conference. However, the league format, similar to many North American sports leagues, features a regular season followed by playoffs. This means that even teams in lower positions, such as ninth place, still have a chance to contend for the championship title in December.
