Microsoft Reconsiders Xbox Exclusives Amidst Internal Discussions

Less than two months after Phil Spencer retired from leading Microsoft’s gaming division and was replaced by Asha Sharma, significant internal discussions are reportedly underway regarding Xbox exclusivity. Sharma, initially a cause for concern due to her background in AI, has quickly earned community trust by rejecting AI-centric approaches, promising a return to Xbox console focus, and discontinuing the criticized “This is an Xbox” campaign.

Under Sharma’s leadership, the Xbox brand has seen rapid developments. Promises have been made to expand its industry-leading backward compatibility, address Quick Resume issues, and the company has unveiled Project Helix, hosted an Xbox Partner Preview, and recently announced a major overhaul of the Achievements system. Adding to these initiatives, reports indicate Sharma believes Game Pass has become too expensive and aims to increase its value for players.

Now, new rumors suggest a deeper strategic re-evaluation. Jez Corden, editor-in-chief of Windows Central, reported on The Xbox Two Podcast that his sources reveal extensive internal debates about Xbox’s exclusive content strategy. Corden stated, “There are very, very, very big discussions happening about exclusivity stuff right now. They recognize the value – it’s just a matter of what kind of company you want to be, ultimately. Do you want to be an ecosystem-first company, or do you want to be a publishing-first company?”

Corden further suggests that Microsoft’s internal leadership, including CEO Satya Nadella, is beginning to acknowledge the substantial value Xbox brings to the company, potentially more than previously recognized. “You can’t do both well, either the hardware operation will be reduced to essentially what Surface is now, a shadow of its former self, not its deathbed, do you really want that for your Xbox brand which is the only consumer-facing ecosystem that has any form of cloud with consumers, And Satya said in the leaked conversation with staff that Xbox has value on the company side as well because when I meet a lot of executives, they don’t want to talk about cloud, they want to talk about Xbox, they want to talk about Halo, they want to talk about Xbox games, that’s where you reach your consumers when they are not working, I think they are increasingly recognizing that.”

However, the decision is not straightforward. Microsoft’s games have historically performed exceptionally well on PlayStation consoles, presenting a complex financial consideration. Corden concludes, “At the end of the day, they are leaving money on the table and it’s hard to argue with a spreadsheet.”

What do you think Asha Sharma and her Xbox team will ultimately decide?
