The RefCam, a body-worn camera for football referees, is gradually being integrated into football competitions. Its primary aim is to provide fans with an enhanced viewing experience by showing precisely what the referee sees at any given moment during a match. This innovation is also intended to increase transparency in the referee’s decision-making process.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation and LaLiga have confirmed that the RefCam will be deployed for the first time in Spain this week.
The Copa del Rey final, a match between Atlético de Madrid and Real Sociedad scheduled for Saturday, April 18th at 9:00 PM CEST (8:00 PM BST), will be the inaugural game to feature this technology. The referee for this historic match will be Javier Alberola, and the RefCam will also include an integrated microphone. Broadcasters will be responsible for blending the traditional camera feeds with the referee’s perspective, promising spectacular footage and a deeper understanding of officiating calls.
Following its debut, the RefCam will be utilized in additional fixtures, including Barcelona vs. Celta on April 22nd, Betis vs. Real Madrid on April 24th, Valencia vs. Atlético de Madrid, and the final El Clásico clash between Barcelona and Real Madrid on May 10th.
