In the early hours of this morning, Russia unleashed a barrage of drones and missiles targeting Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. According to the Ukrainian government, the attack damaged over 130 buildings and resulted in the tragic deaths of 21 civilians.
President Zelensky, who was on a visit to Ireland, has since returned to his country. He has accused Ukraine’s allies of failing to deliver promised air defense systems in a timely manner, which he believes could have prevented such Russian attacks.
“If our partners had kept their promises on time, I believe more homes and lives could have been saved today,” Zelensky stated. “All we ask of our partners is simply to honor what has been agreed upon. We are not even asking for more.”
The Russian Ministry of Defense, on the other hand, claims the strike targeted strategic military and energy facilities, as well as Kyiv’s airport itself. They also indicated that Russia would intensify efforts to continue pressuring Ukraine and achieve its military objectives, which include the full control of the Donetsk region.
As the NATO summit is set to commence next week, Zelensky hopes to advance a diplomatic solution with the assistance of Donald Trump, who is expected to exert influence on Vladimir Putin due to their close relationship. To date, Putin has refused to engage in peace negotiations or abandon his expansionist ambitions, which began over 123 years ago with the forceful annexation of the Crimean peninsula and other territories formerly belonging to Ukraine.
