Donald Trump has sharply criticized Giorgia Meloni, stating he is “shocked” by her actions, marking an unexpected break with one of his key European allies.
In comments made to an Italian newspaper, Trump accused Meloni of lacking courage and failing to support U.S. endeavors in the Middle East, particularly concerning the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. He also implied she was unwilling to confront Iran’s nuclear aspirations.
This criticism emerges after Meloni’s public disapproval of Trump’s attack on Pope Leo XIV, which she deemed “unacceptable.” Her firm stance represented a rare moment of disagreement after months of close alignment with Washington.
Italian officials quickly rallied behind Meloni. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani affirmed the country’s commitment to its alliance with the U.S., but stressed that such partnerships must be built on mutual respect and openness.
This exchange signals a growing rift between the two leaders amidst escalating geopolitical tensions, with the conflict involving Iran and disruptions to global energy supplies straining transatlantic relations.
