Atlético Madrid has secured their place in the Champions League semi-finals, advancing past FC Barcelona on aggregate despite suffering a 1-2 defeat at the Metropolitano Stadium. The aggregate score ended 3-2 in favor of Atlético.
Barcelona’s quest for their sixth Champions League title continues to be elusive, with their last triumph occurring in 2015. This victory marks Atlético’s first appearance in the UCL semi-finals in nine years and their seventh European Cup semi-final appearance overall.
The match began ideally for Barcelona. After just four minutes, Lamine Yamal, who seemed to channel a “LeBron James”-esque energy, put Barça ahead. Ferran Torres doubled their lead twenty minutes later. This erased Atlético’s 2-0 advantage from the first leg, leveling the tie for over 70 minutes and setting up a dramatic knockout scenario.
However, Barcelona’s celebration was short-lived. Ademola Lookman quickly responded for Atlético on a counter-attack, assisted by Marcos Llorente, almost immediately after Ferran’s goal. This crucial equalizer came after a lengthy stoppage where medical staff attended to Fermín López, who was bleeding following an incident with Atlético’s goalkeeper, Musso.
Lookman’s goal was the final score of the match, which remained tense throughout. Barcelona pushed hard for an equalizer, including a disallowed goal by VAR, but lacked the energy in the final 20 minutes. Eric García, who replaced the suspended Pau Cubarsí, received a direct red card in the 79th minute after a VAR review. Despite Atlético dominating the closing stages, Barcelona still had opportunities to force extra time.
Ultimately, Atlético has once again eliminated Barcelona, mirroring their recent semi-final victory over them in the Copa del Rey just a month prior. They will now face either Arsenal or Sporting Lisbon later this month. Remarkably, this is the third time Diego Simeone’s Atlético has knocked out Barcelona in the Champions League, previously in 2014 and 2016, both times reaching the final only to be defeated by Real Madrid.
